The country’s Health Ministry said it was considering the move amid the spread of the Omicron Covid variant. Under German rules, those travelling from ‘virus variant areas’ must quarantine for two weeks upon arrival.
The rules apply both to the vaccinated and the unvaccinated.
Germany’s Government is expected to make a decision later today, according to Reuters.
The announcement came as German Health Minister revealed he expected Omicron will unleash a “massive fifth wave” of the pandemic.
Talking during a visit to Lower Saxony, he said Germany had to prepare for a challenge “that we have never seen in this form before”.
It also follows the discovery earlier this week that Germany is around 60million Covid vaccine doses short of the number it would require to reach its own vaccination targets.
Mr Lauterbach noted that many were surprised by the news, “myself included”.
It means Germany is unlikely to meet its target of giving an extra 30million doses by the end of the year.
More to follow.
