Indian-American Bharat Ramamurti is the latest Indian-origin professional to be identified as part of the Biden-Harris administration. Ramamurti has been appointed the deputy director for the National Economic Council (NEC) for Financial Reform and Consumer Protection.

Managing Director (MD) of the Corporate Power program at the Roosevelt Institute, Bharat Ramamurti was the top economic advisor to Democrat Elizabeth Warren during her 2020 presidential campaign. He has also served as a senior counsel for banking and economic policy in Warren’s Senate office.

“I am honored to be joining the Biden-Harris Administration as Deputy Director of the National Economic Council. We have much to do to get through this crisis and create a stronger and fairer economy and I am excited to get to work alongside this great team,” Ramamurti said in a tweet.

A graduate of Harvard College and Yale Law School, Ramamurti was born in Massachusetts and currently lives in Washington DC along with his wife and two daughters.

Along with other members appointed to the National Economic Council, Ramamurti will be working under NEC director Brian Deese. The NEC is an advisory body that guides the office of the President of the United States to frame and implement domestic and international economic policies.

According to statements made by US President-elect Joe Biden’s Chief of Staff Ron Klain, the Biden-Harris administration will work to make sure “every American has a fair shot to pursue and achieve the American dream”.

Apart from Bharat Ramamurti, Indian-Americans appointed to key positions in the Biden-Harris administration include Neera Tanden, Dr Vivek Murthy, Arun Majumdar, and Seema Nanda among others.
