The best ‘hidden gem’ European destinations for British expats in 2022 -not Spain

According to William Russell, there are around five million Britons living outside the UK. While many choose to settle in Spain, there are many other amazing options.

Thessaloniki, Greece

With hot summers and snowy winters, Thessaloniki is situated in the north of Greece and borders the sea.

The second largest city in Greece, Thessaloniki has so many UNESCO ancient sites it’s almost an open-air museum.

The gateway to the Aegean sea, Thessaloniki is a great choice for expats who want a mix of city and beach life.

Tripadvisor user, Ellh C, describes the Ladadika Old Town as a “hidden gem”. They said: “Amazing in the summer, romantic in the winter.”

Yalikavak, Turkey

Part of the Bodrum peninsula, Yalikavak is popular with international expat retirees and many properties have beautiful views of the Aegean Sea.

Yalikavak offers expats a slower pace of life as well as an insight into traditional Turkish village life.

The village has beautiful scenery ranging from small farms to olive groves and the stunning coast.

Nearby Palmarina is a great weekend destination for expats who want to enjoy some of Bodrum’s nightlife and restaurants.


Limassol, Cyprus

The second largest city in Cyprus, Limassol has a buzzing city centre and a pretty seafront.

Expats will be spoilt for choice when it comes to beaches, 14 of which have the prestigious Blue Flag status.

Limassol is a great choice for active Britons as there are many local nature trails to hike or mountain bike.

Tallinn, Estonia

Not every expat is seeking sunny weather. Expats seeking cheaper prices and an exciting lifestyle could consider moving to Tallinn.

Kaunas, Lithuania

As European Capital of Culture for 2022, the city has a full cultural calendar. Highlights include street art projects and concerts.

Kaunas’ Devil’s Museum is one of a kind offering visitors more than 2,000 depictions of the devil from all over the world.

Rent and everyday items are also devilishly cheap in Kaunas and Britons can expect to pay far less than in the UK.
