Amazon has cancelled its plans for the Lord of the Rings MMO it announced two years back and the Amazon Game Studios title won’t see the light of day, as per a report by Bloomberg. The game was being made for PC and consoles.
Back in 2018, Athlon Games, the developer behind titles such as Gears 4, had announced that it would be working on the project. One year later, Amazon Game Studios joined in the game development. As to why the game is no longer being developed, the report states a dispute between Amazon and Tencent to be the reason as Tencent acquired Leyou Technologies Holdings Ltd, Amazon’s partner in the game development and now there are some contract issues that have not been resolved.
Amazon Game Studios video game projects keep getting canned. Last year, it cancelled its multiplayer shooting game Crucible. Other canned projects include Breakaway, Intensity and Nova. The company should complete the development of New World, its another MMO that’s in the works and will hopefully be launched.
This is certainly bad news for Lord of the Rings fans yearning for a quality title set in Tolkein’s Middle-earth since Monolith’s Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War games and EA’s Battle For Middle-earth RTS titles. Amazon still has that Lord of the Rings TV show in the pipeline. And then there is Daedelic Entertainment’s upcoming third-person action-adventure game Lord of the Rings: Gollum. That should perk you up.
