TOKYO: India’s top medal contender Neeraj Chopra on Wednesday qualified for the final of the men’s javelin throw event at the Olympic Games here with a stunning first attempt of 86.65m.
Competing in his first Olympics, Chopra didn’t take long to make it to the final to be held on Saturday (Aug 7). He sent the spear well past the qualifying mark of 83.50m on his first throw to top Group A of the qualification round.
Germany’s Johannes Vetter, who is the favourite for a gold medal, also earned direct qualification by registering a distance of 85.64m on his third attempt.
Finland’s Lassi Etelatalo stood third among the qualified athletes from Group A, with an effort of 84.50m.
The 23-year-old Neeraj left the arena after his first throw, having secured his place in the final easily.
India’s Shivpal Singh is scheduled to throw in Group B of the qualification round, beginning 7 am IST today.
