Reigning world champion PV Sindhu was handed a straight-game defeat in the women’s singles final of the Swiss Open Super 300 tournament by reigning Olympic champion Carolina Marin. The Spaniard did not break a sweat as she needed just 35 minutes to outclass the second-seeded Indian shuttler 21-12, 21-5 at the St. Jakobshalle in Basel on Sunday.
PV Sindhu had headed into the final on the back of an improved showing in Basel. Sindhu had defeated the likes of Busanan Ongbamrunphan and Mia Blichfeldt enroute to the title match. However, on Sunday, she ran into Marin who did not put a foot wrong.
Sindhu’s title drought continues as World No. 7 has not won a final on the tour since her gold medal-winning run at the World Championships in Basel in August 2019.
