HIGHLIGHTS

  • Manchester City thrash Crystal Palace 4-0 to move to the 2nd spot of league table
  • Manchester United retain top spot after goalless draw at Anfield
  • Liverpool pushed to 4th spot after Leicester City beat Southampton 2-0

Defending champions Liverpool paid the price for not taking their chances as they were held to a draw by table toppers Manchester United in a much-anticipated Premier League clash that remained goalless at the Anfield.

On the other hand, Manchester City are establishing themselves as genuine contenders as they thrashed Crystal Palace 4-0 to move up to the 2nd spot of the Premier League table. City are now at the 2nd spot, 35 points, 2 behind Manchester United with a game in hand over the league leaders.

Liverpool’s goalless draw at home meant they slipped to the 4th spot. Leicester City, with a 2-0 win over Southampton on Sunday, moved to the 2nd spot.

John Stones double helps Manchester City vs Palace

Defender John Stones scored an unlikely double as Manchester City thrashed Cyrstal Palace 4-0 and clinch their 5th successive league win, on Sunday. Central defender Stones, closing in on 100 Premier League appearances for City, headed his first league goal for the club after a sublime cross by Kevin de Bruyne in the 26th minute.

Ilkay Gundogan curled in a delightful second 11 minutes after the interval before Stones was in the right place to fire home a loose ball with his left foot in the 68th minute.

Raheem Sterling crowned a superb second-half City display with an unstoppable free kick into the top corner late on.

Goalkeeper Alisson saves the blushes for Liverpool

Goalkeeper Alisson Becker made two vital saves as Liverpool avoided a defeat against a resolute Manchester United.

It was the third game in the last five between the clubs at Anfield that has ended goalless and will have left many frustrated but United will be happy to remain top of the league and with a three-point advantage over their North West rivals.

United are the first time to stop Liverpool scoring at Anfield in the Premier League since October 2018 but that was as much to do with the champions’ lack of creativity and sharpness in the final third as United’s solid defending.
