Chennai Super Kings bounced back in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 in style on Friday as they registered a comfortable 6-wicket win over Punjab Kings in Match 8 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
CSK, who had lost their opening game against Delhi Capitals, chased down the paltry target of 107 in xx.x overs to register their first win of the 14th season. A 31-ball 46 from Moeen Ali and career-best 4/13 from Deepak Chahar made sure MS Dhoni celebrated his 200th T20 match for CSK with a dominant victory.
IPL 2021, PBKS vs CSK: Highlights
CSK rode on solid knocks from Ali and Faf du Plessis (36 not out) to cross the finish line with 26 balls to spare.Ali, who missed out on his maiden fifty in yellow in the IPL, did his job by going after the Punjab Kings bowlers after a wobbly start from the Super Kings.
Mohammed Shami picked up the wickets of Suresh Raina (8) and Ambati Rayudu (0) in successive balls in the 15th over but his effort came too late for the Punjab Kings who were ordinary on Friday evening.
Moeen Ali and Faf du Plessis anchor comfortable chase
CSK started off slowly and lost the wicket of Ruturaj Gaikwad early in the chase as Arshdeep Singh sent him back for 5 (15 balls).
Moeen then joined du Plessis at the crease and immediately took charge of the innings after weathering the early storm. The English all-rounder and the former South African skipper added 66 for the second wicket to take the team to safety and eventually past the required target.
The win was set up by Deepak Chahar very early in the match as he bagged 4 wickets for 13 runs from his opening spell after Dhoni won the toss and put Punjab in to bat in Mumbai. Chahar started the damage with the wicket of Mayank Agarwal in the third over before Ravindra Jadeja ran out KL Rahul with a direct hit from point in the 3rd over.
Chahar removed Chris Gayle and Nicholas Pooran in the fifth over of the powerplay to break the backbone of the PBKS batting lineup.
But he wasn’t finished just yet as Dhoni decided to bowl him out in one go and Chahar responded by getting the in-form Deepak Hooda caught at mid-off for 10.
Shah Rukh Khan’s 47 in vain
Highly-rated Tamil Nadu batsman Shah Rukh Khan showed glimpses of his potential as he went after the CSK bowling attack in a counter-attacking display. Shah Rukh hit 47 from 36 balls, collecting 2 sixes and 4 boundaries but he did not find any support from the rest of the Punjab Kings batsmen.
While Chahar picked up 4 wickets, Sam Curran, Dwayne Bravo and Moeen Ali picked up one each to restrict Punjab to a below-par total.
