India vs Australia: It’s a great reward for Nattu, says David Warner on T Natarajan’s Test call up

Left-arm fast bowler T Natarajan came into the notice of the national selectors after his impressive debut for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL 2020 in UAE.

  • T Natarajan was added to India’s Test squad on Friday as Umesh Yadav’s replacement
  • Natarajan was asked to stay back in Australia after the ODIs and T20Is by Indian team management
  • He was the highest wicket-taker in the T20Is with 6 scalps while the only ODI he played he picked 2 wickets

Australia opener David Warner is very happy at the inclusion of his Sunrisers Hyderabad teammate T Narajan in India’s Test squad ahead of the third match in Sydney.

Natarajan, who was already in Australia as a net bowler for Team India, was included as a replacement for Umesh Yadav, who was ruled out of the rest of the series with a calf injury.

Natarajan, known as a limited-overs specialist, was earlier added as Navdeep Saini’s cover in the ODIs in November, injured spinner Varun Chakravarthy’s replacement in the T20Is and now Umesh’s injury has turned into a blessing in disguise for the left-arm quick.

Natarajan, who came into the notice of the national selectors after his impressive debut in IPL 2020, can now make his debut in all the 3 formats on the same tour if he gets a look in on January 7.

“I think it’s a great reward for Nattu. I think given that he was coming over here after missing the birth of his child to be a net bowler and then being injected into the actual squad is a great achievement for him and congratulations to him.

“He is a very, very good bowler and I got to see that and captain him for Sunrisers Hyderabad. I wish him all the best and if he does get that opportunity, we know he will be comfortable and will know what he has to do,” Natarajan said.

Fast bowler Shardul Thakur is the frontrunner to replace Umesh in the playing XI, even though India added Natarajan to their squad on Friday as his official replacement.

The third Test will mark the return of Rohit Sharma, who missed the first two matches due to a hamstring injury that he had suffered during IPL 2020 in the UAE.

Rohit was named the vice-captain of the Indian Test side on January 1 and is likely to come into the side in place of opener Mayank Agarwal, who has struggled in the series so far.
