Skin Minimalism: The new Skincare Trend of 2021 – Eagles Vine

The standards we hold for our skin are quite bizarre. Poreless, glass skin is a concept that is prevalent in the Asian community and is something we all want. As much as we desire it, it’s not a healthy standard. It makes us question our skin which has pores and which is quite normal.

We understand that you want perfect glass skin, you love learning about skincare products and want perfect skin. So, you started following the 10 step Korean skincare routine. If you haven’t heard about it, let us explain it to you. In the 10 step skincare routine, you start off with double cleansing, moving to exfoliation and then there are 5 steps of hydration. As much as we want to follow the 10 step routine, it is not sustainable and suitable for our skin. Your motive should not be to attain poreless glass skin, because as much as it’s impractical it’s not a healthy standard. Your motive should be to attain healthy skin and use those products that are made for your skin type.

There is an alternative to the 10 step routine which is economical, sustainable and gets you the result that you want. It is known as skin minimalism or skinimalism. It means pulling yourself back to the essentials, using those minimal products that can help you achieve your healthy skin goal.

We spoke to Dr Manasi Shirolikar, a dermatologist to get her views on skin minimalism. “According to me, skin minimalism is the way to go! Simply because that is the best way to get a sustainable and consistent routine. It is something that we, dermats, have always practised. It has helped our patients as well.”, said Dr Manasi. According to her, skincare can only show results when we, consumers, are consistent with it and it is not possible to have a 10 step routine in both morning and night. “10 Step Korean Routine was a trend and we have made a full circle with it. We are back to how it was and how it should be and I hope that trend doesn’t come back.”

  • Gentle Cleanser:
    The first step in any routine should be cleansing. It gets rid of the dirt, excessive oil and impurities that can clog your pores which can lead to breakouts and who wants that? Sleeping with makeup is also not a good idea, because it can lead to breakouts and congested skin. You should cleanse your face twice a day i.e morning and night. Now, you’ve learnt why you should cleanse, let’s learn about the type of cleanser you should use. Everybody likes the squeaky clean feeling we get after we cleanse, don’t we? Well, you shouldn’t love it, if your skin feels squeaky clean it means that the natural oils of the skin have also been stripped with dirt and impurities. So, you should use a gentle cleanser that gives you a hydrating feeling after cleansing. You should cleanse your face for 45-60 seconds and then PAT dry your face. It is advised that dry skin should use a cream-based cleanser, combination and oily skin should use a foaming cleanser and normal skin have the liberty to choose any type of cleanser as you are God’s favourite.

  • Exfoliation/Serums/Treatment
    Our skin is a very smart organ, it has the power to exfoliate the dead skin cells on its own. Exfoliation is the next step in the skincare routine, we use chemical or physical exfoliators to get rid of all the impurities and gunk out of our skin. Physical exfoliation basically means using physical scrubs to get rid of the dead skin, while chemical exfoliation means using acids to exfoliate. Chemical exfoliation is not as scary as it sounds, it is sometimes gentler than physical exfoliation as you’re not scrubbing your skin. It advised that you should not exfoliate more than two times a week and there are different exfoliators for different skin types. Dry skin types should use AHAs i.e. lactic acid or glycolic acid to exfoliate, oily/combination and acne-prone skin can use BHAs i.e. salicylic acid to exfoliate. Serums are concentrated formulations that target a specific concern. We have different serums targeted to brighten our skin, reduce hyperpigmentation, reduce the fine lines and acne. Serums can be incorporated into the skincare routine but it is definitely not essential. “It is good to have actives in your routine, but it is not an essential step,” said Dr Manasi.
  • Moisturiser
    We all love that glowy look on our faces but do you know hydration is the answer to that? Hydration is an important step in any skincare routine. We have all heard that if you have oily skin, you should not apply moisturiser. But that is untrue, you should never skip out on moisturiser because it forces your skin to produce more oil and that makes it look oiler. There are many different moisturisers, dry skin should use a cream-based moisturiser and oily and combination skin should use gel-based moisturisers. Normal skin types can choose any product.
  • Broad Spectrum Sunscreen
    This is arguably the most important step of the skincare routine. Any product or regimen is useless if you don’t wear sunscreen. A broad-spectrum sunscreen is a sunscreen that has protection against UVA and UVB rays, it should also have an SPF of more than 30. Sunscreen is a non-negotiable part of the regimen and protects you from a lot of damage. It is advised that you reapply your sunscreen every 2 hours and wear protective gear when you leave your house. It is a major part of the morning routine and is something that you shouldn’t miss.
