Sanjay Kapoor on completing 26 years in Bollywood: All my hard work is finally paying off – Eagles Vine

Sanjay Kapoor became an overnight star with his Bollywood debut in Satish Kaushik’s directorial ‘Prem’ opposite Tabu. The actor, who has some noteworthy films and songs to his credit, completes 26 years in Bollywood today. In an exclusive chat with ETimes, the actor recalls how it was facing the camera for the first time, working with Tabu, and more. Excerpts:

Ask him about his Bollywood journey and the actor lights up, insisting it feels great. “It has been a long time but I still remember the first shot that I gave was for the song, ‘Aati Nahi..’; this was even before 1995. I am moving on from movies to OTT platforms, which is all the rage today. Obviously, there have been a lot of hurdles but it was a great journey and I am glad that people still want to see me and love me, and I got to do some good work. It feels good that all my hard work is finally paying off,” he exults.

Though Tabu starred with Sanjay in the reincarnation drama, she was not the first choice for the film. In fact, director Satish Kaushik was also not going to be at the helm of the project. “The first time I faced the camera was with late actress Divya Bharti for a screen-test. We were shooting in National Park. Back then, Shekhar Kapur was directing the film and we were planning to cast Divya, but things didn’t fall in place. However, later, I did work with her in ‘Kartavya’; unfortunately, she passed away and the film remained incomplete. That is an unforgettable yet tragic memory associated with the film,” reveals Sanjay.

While their transcendental love story made history, Sanjay and Tabu didn’t get to collaborate again but it is on the actor’s wishlist. “It was great working with Tabu in ‘Prem’. We both were new and raw back then and helped each other during the shoot. But we both are doing good work now and I am sure some project will bring us together soon. We have a long way to go. Though we don’t talk daily, I am in touch with Tabu and we are great friends,” he asserts.

The actor will also not forget the day of the mahurat shot because late actress Sridevi was present there. “During the mahurat of the song ‘Aati Nahi’ many celebs had graced the sets and Sridevi was one of them. She wasn’t married to Boney at the time but she came on the sets; I have a very clear memory of a family member present on the sets,” he reminisces emotionally.

If ‘Prem’ was remade, who would he want to reprise the lead roles? “In today’s time, Ranbir Kapoor will be the perfect choice to play my role. He is a good actor and Deepika Padukone would be a great choice to play Tabu’s character,” concludes Sanjay.
