Joan Collins’ Brexit summary sends brutal message to moaning Rejoiners: ‘Seize the day!’

Dame Joan Collins recalls ’embarrassing’ hospital visit

Joan is the star guest on Piers Morgan’s Life Stories this evening ‒ and the 88-year-old looks set to dazzle viewers in an exceptionally honest interview. Best known for playing the role of vengeful schemer Alexis Carrington Colby in the Eighties soap opera Dynasty, Joan’s charity work has also been recognised globally ‒ as have her starring film roles, such as The Road to Hong Kong, Revenge and Tales from the Crypt. But Joan has never been shy about expressing her political views, and Brexit is no exception.

Before the EU referendum in 2016, Joan famously weighed in on Twitter by tweeting the word ‘Brexit’ together with three Union Jacks, a thumbs-up sign and a heart.

In an interview on the subject, she added: “Yes, I do feel we should leave.

“I think we want our sovereignty and we want to make our own laws.

“This country is very different from the country I grew up in. I’ve seen a big change.”

In what appeared to be a nod to the years of chaos and division that followed the Brexit vote, Joan urged Britons to embrace change with optimism.

Her words can arguably be seen as a message to the group of Rejoiners, like Lord Andrew Adonis and Lord Michael Heseltine, who continue to fight against the 2016 result.

In her interview with the Daily Mail, Joan continued: “Don’t look back. You know, carpe diem, seize the day.

“I try to make every day count. You achieve something and you enjoy something.”

As she appeared to allude to here, it took years for the result of the referendum to be honoured.

Not until Prime Minister Boris Johnson won his thumping majority at the 2019 general election was Britain’s exit from the EU finalised.

Today, after Mr Johnson secured a trade deal with Brussels on Christmas Eve, the UK finds itself out of the bloc with trade continuing between Britain and the EU.

The UK’s successful COVID-19 vaccine programme is seen by many as the first major achievement of what post-Brexit Britain can do outside the EU.

Joan’s interview with Piers will be far more candid and personal, though.

In it, she discusses her decision to have an abortion at the beginning of her career ‒ at the age of 26.

She tells the former Good Morning Britain host: “I had an abortion. It would have been the death of my career, and I was by then 26.

“Of course I hesitated but I realised that if I was going to have a child I was going to be able to bring the child up properly and I believed very strongly that I’m in charge of my body.

“I was a feminist before the word was heard and I shall do what I felt was right for me.

“It would have been wrong to have done that. It would have ruined my life… it would have ruined my life.”

She went on to have three children later in life.

Joan gave birth to Tara and Alexander while she was married to singer Anthony Newley.

She had her third child, Katyana, with businessman Ron Kass.

Joan is currently married to her fifth husband, Hollywood producer Percy Gibson, who she wed in 2002.

Her first marriage was with actor Maxwell Reed and her fourth was with Swedish pop singer Peter Holm.

Piers Morgan’s Life Stories airs tonight at 9pm on ITV.
