Jeremy Clarkson details awkward moment with Prince Philip as he mourns for late royal

Jeremy Clarkson, 60, has claimed Prince Philip awkwardly mistook him for Ainsley Harriott when they first met. The late royal died “peacefully” at his Windsor Castle residence yesterday. In his latest column, The Grand Tour star wrote: “I met him once at some stupid television awards thing.

“It really wasn’t his scene. I know this because he thought I was Ainsley Harriott.

“But there he was, patiently shaking hands with countless orange-faced fools and jesters.

“Imagine that. A proud man. A Royal Navy Commander. A king in his own right. Destined to spend 70 years in the shadow of his wife.”

News of Prince Philip’s death was announced in a statement by the family yesterday.

He went on to say it’ll be a “different world” without the late Prince, who he also branded a “very good looking man”.

“Even I’d have turned for him back in the day,” he added.

Prince Philip married Queen Elizabeth II in 1947 and it wasn’t long before their first child arrived.

The couple welcomed their first son Charles on November 14, 1948.

Two years later, they welcomed Princess Anne into the world.

The couple went on to have sons Prince Andrew and Edward.

Tributes flooded in for the late royal on social media yesterday.

Eamonn Holmes commented: “HRH Prince Phillip has died. #RIP.”

Piers Morgan tweeted: “Thank you, Prince Philip.

“You were the greatest of Britons – a selfless, strong-willed and ferociously loyal man who devoted your life to public duty, your beloved Queen and your adoptive country.”
