‘Ram Lakhan’ has completed 32 glorious years today. How do you look back at the film?
It is as fresh as yesterday. It has been 32 long years and the film is still relevant even today in terms of its storyline and theme. ‘Corruption never pays‘ was its theme. It portrayed the importance of relationships, virtues like respect for elders, honesty and so much more. Each and every one of us involved in the film believed in each other.
What are your fondest memories of the film?
I have so many memories attached to the film. This is the first time I was directing Madhuri Dixit, against many veterans and seasoned actors like Anil Kapoor, Jackie Shroff. Working with Anupam Kher and Anil Kapoor with contrasting characters from ‘Dr Dang’ and ‘Meri Jung’ was another experience for me.
Making ‘Ram Lakhan’ was more like a picnic than a serious event. A major part of the script and scenes were improvised on the sets of the film. I never gave any script to my stars. I just had the story and characters in my mind during the making of the film. We all just wanted to make it a good and entertaining movie.
How was it working with Jackie Shroff and Anil Kapoor?
Jackie Shroff and Anil Kapoor share a great bond and even after 32 years they look like best friends so I am seriously planning a film with them.
Did you anticipate the success of the film?
I never expect anything from my films. Whenever I make a film, I just enjoy it. I take interest and show involvement in each and every department of filmmaking without caring much about the outcome at the box-office. The same thing happened with ‘Ram Lakhan’ too.
What is the best compliment you received after the release and success of the film?
After the release of ‘Ram Lakhan’, the best compliment I received was from a film trade magazine who wrote that the film is a textbook for all film writers as it has one of the best screenplays ever written in the history of Indian cinema and trust me I started the film with a half script on papers and that was the fun.
The film has achieved cult status today. How does it feel?
Yes, I guess it has indeed become a cult film. We have just done our job which is to make a good and sincere film and we were successful in entertaining people.
You are coming back with Jackie and Anil again. Can fans expect the same magic on the silver screen yet again?
Yes, Jackie and Anil are evergreen actors who are still active so I need to write a fantastic script with fantastic characterizations. I am sure to make one and it will be called ‘Ram Chand Krishan Chand’. It will be a comedy thriller. Just wait and watch!
Do you think working with Anil and Jackie has changed in any way over the years?
I feel none of us have changed. Whether it is Anil, Jackie, Madhuri, Anupam, or Satish Kaushik, our relationship has not faded even today. We are still the same as we were at the time of ‘Ram Lakhan’.
Any message that you would like to give your fans on this special occasion?
I want all young guys to understand that human relations are more important than business or money because that is the ultimate happiness in life.
